"My initial idea for this concentration was to represent human nature through the use of animal representation. I had hoped to accomplish this by taking photos and sorting through them by their tones. Each painting I made was going to be of the animal as it is in the photos, but added to a more human environment to represent the specific mood. Most of these early paintings are in my breadth section now.
I quickly realized that too many emotions were expressed by different animals. With a little thought I decided to narrow my idea to one specific animal, a horse. My concentration then moved from multiple angles of human nature to one specific growth and destruction that comes with the emotion "pride". To explain my progress from there I will start with the four horses and their colors. For two of them I chose a varying tone of white and black (slides II-1 and II-4). This was to represent that nothing is purely white or black, or benevolent or malevolent. For the other two the colors were to be a random mixture between black and white so they became brown (slide II-3) and dun (slide II-2). For slides II 1-4, the horses are shown their most natural states. These represent man in his lowest, most humble level of life. The backgrounds serve to provide a sense of normalcy and plainness. For slides II 5-8, the each horse has obtained something individually unique. I chose the backgrounds for these paintings to be extraordinary to give each horse a feeling of individuality and one of a kind. This should give the viewer the impression that this is the beginning stage of pride because each horse has something that the others do not. For slides II 9-12, the horses appear to be blurry and rotting away to show what pride can do to an individual. Each of the horses has patches of skin left and their manes and tails to identify that they are mere shadows of their former selves. The backgrounds are bland, with the exception of slide II-12 which shows one of the horses hiding in the shadows away from the beauty of the outside world. My concentration is supposed to leave the viewer with a sense of how pride can provide the ultimate destruction of oneself whether it is man or beast."
